Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity
Brief Description of Business: CFHFH facilitates home ownership for low and moderate income families in New Hanover and Pender Counties. We achieve this through the construction of safe, decent, and affordable housing and through the provision of no interest mortgages. Thanks to the generous individuals and organizations that provide financial resources, materials and supplies, and volunteer labor, we are able to help make the American dream of home ownership a reality for more than a dozen families each year. Like every homeowner, Habitat families make a down payment and take on a mortgage to purchase their homes. They also contribute between 250 and 400 hours of “sweat equity” as they help to build Habitat houses.
How long have you been a member of WCFHBA? Since 2011.
Why did you join WCFHBA? We joined WCFHBA to better connect with the builder community, to learn from their best practices, and to explore opportunities for collaboration. In 2012, members of WCFHBA participated in our “Blitz Build,” and together we built five houses in seven days!
What is your most prized possession? My house, naturally.
If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see? Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington D.C. in 1963. I was living just a few miles away when he gave the speech, but I was too young to attend.
What was your first job? Construction laborer.
Who/What inspires you? I am inspired daily by the volunteers who give their time and effort to Habitat, and by the homeowners who balance the needs of jobs (often more than one), kids, saving for their down payment, and building their own house!
Thank you, Steve, for participating in Member Monday!
